Why the Numbers Don’t Matter as Much as You Think

Let’s get something straight: your value as a speaker is not defined by the size of the audience in front of you.

I know how easy it is to get caught up in the numbers.

Three people show up to your workshop and suddenly you feel like it’s a flop. Meanwhile, when you see someone else post about their 3,000-person event, you start wondering if you’re even cut out for this.

But here’s the truth I (Kat) had to learn, and relearn: the number of people in the room doesn’t matter nearly as much as what you create for the people who are actually there.

From “Producing” to Simply Being

When I first started speaking, I put so much pressure on myself to “perform.” I thought my job was to produce something shiny and flawless, the kind of talk that would impress anyone and everyone.

But all that did was make me anxious.

I’d overthink every slide, second-guess every story, and obsess over whether people were going to like me.

At some point, I realized I was making it about me, not them.

So I shifted. Instead of worrying about what I needed to produce, I focused on what I could create for the people in the room.

And that shift changed everything.

If there were three people in the audience, I committed to making it the best, most life-changing experience for those three people. If there were 300, I gave the same energy, the same presence, the same heart.

When I stopped performing and started being, the results came naturally.

People felt it. They leaned in. They left with transformation instead of just information.

Three People Can Change Everything

Here’s something worth remembering: some of your biggest opportunities, referrals, and collaborations might come from a room that felt “too small.”

I can’t tell you how many times a workshop of five people led to a client who became a long-term partner, or a small talk created ripple effects I never saw coming.

When you’re present and intentional with whoever shows up, you never know who might be sitting in front of you.

One person could introduce you to your next stage, your next client, or your next big breakthrough.

So don’t write off the “small” rooms. Treat them like the big ones, because for the people sitting there, it is big.

The Ripple Effect You Can’t Measure

The truth is, we rarely know the full impact of our words.

You might think you’re just giving another presentation. Meanwhile, someone in the audience might be hearing exactly what they needed to get unstuck, to finally take action, or to see themselves differently.

That ripple doesn’t end when they leave the room.

They’ll carry that shift into their business, their clients, their families, and their communities.

And here’s the kicker: you don’t need thousands of people for those ripples to start. Sometimes three is plenty.

It’s About Presence, Not Perfection

This is the part that trips up so many speakers, especially those who are just getting started. They think they need to “produce” something big, polished, and flawless to be taken seriously.

But your audience doesn’t need perfect. They need present.

They need to feel that you’re with them, not performing for them. They need your real stories, your honest insights, your willingness to show up as a human first and an expert second.

And when you do that, the size of the audience fades into the background.

Your Next Step

If you’ve been holding back from speaking because you’re worried about filling a room, here’s your reminder: start anyway.

Whether three people or 3,000 show up, your job is the same, to create the best, most life-changing experience you can for whoever is there.

And the funny thing? When you give your all to small rooms, big rooms tend to follow.

Because people talk.

People remember how you made them feel. And those ripples will eventually lead to the audiences you dream of.

Your presence has the power to change lives.

And that’s always worth it.
