Grass Is Useless (and So Is Busywork)

Why ripping up what’s not working is the first step

When my husband and I bought our first house, the yard was all grass. And I mean nothing but grass.

Boring. Not bird-friendly. Zero personality.

So what did we do? We started tearing it up — literally — to make space for something better.

Sound familiar?

Starting a business often begins the same way: you inherit a bunch of default systems, templates, or “grass” that isn’t serving you. And it’s your job to rip that up and start building something that actually aligns with your vision.

The First Year Looks… Sparse

But you’re laying the foundation whether it shows or not

That first year of gardening? Not cute. Everything looked awkward, patchy, and underwhelming.

But we kept going — planting, adjusting, learning. And over time, things filled in.

They rooted. They bloomed.

The early days of business are no different. You might feel like it’s all trial and error (because it is), but underneath the surface, you’re growing roots.

Those roots — systems, skills, mindset, relationships — are what will keep you grounded when things get rocky later.

Year Seven Feels Like a Full-Bloom Moment

The messy middle eventually gives way to flow

Now that I’m seven years into this business (eight years self-employed), I can honestly say — it’s lush.

I have confidence.

Not because I never fail, but because I’ve done this enough to know I’ll figure it out. The doubt doesn’t derail me anymore because my foundation is solid.

The mindset work? Essential. The reps? Non-negotiable.

You don’t wake up with confidence. You build it — one tiny season at a time.

Faster Growth Is Possible (With the Right Help)

Why you don’t have to do it all by yourself

Looking back, we definitely could’ve landscaped our yard faster if we had hired professionals.

Same goes for business. If you bring in support from someone who’s already done it — someone who can see the big picture and guide you — you will move faster and avoid rookie mistakes.

That’s why we offer strategy calls.

Not because we’re pushy.

But because if we’re the right fit for you, we can help you grow your business faster and with way less guesswork. (And if we’re not the right fit? No hard feelings.)

From Patchy to Purposeful: What I’d Ask If I Were You

If you’re in year one or two and things feel… sparse, awkward, or slow — that’s okay. That’s normal. That’s the season you’re in.

But you don’t have to stay stuck. Ask questions. Get help. And most importantly, keep going.

If you’ve got questions for someone a few years ahead of you in business, I’d love to hear them.
